Walt Disney World officially confirmed that the iconic, life-size gingerbread house will not return to Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. The shocking holiday announcement came on Wednesday as part of Disney’s “Halfway to the Holidays” media push. Disney officials confirmed the permanent retirement of the beloved guest favorite, effectively ending a massive 27-year holiday tradition at the Deluxe resort hotel.
The impressive Victorian-style display had been an annual staple in the resort’s lobby since debuting back in 1999. The life-size structure famously took hundreds of pounds of honey, chocolate, and icing to construct each year. The display took what fans initially assumed was a temporary pause during the 2025 holiday season. At the time, Disney paused the build due to extensive, year-long construction work to modernize the grand lobby space.
Lobby Renovations and Past Pauses
The major resort refurbishment permanently altered the footprint of the grand common area. The design updates included the addition of a brand-new, birdcage-shaped lobby bar called The Perch. While fans fully expected the grand house to reclaim its regular spot once construction crews packed up, the new lobby layout and updated aesthetic ultimately led to the permanent cancellation of the massive structure.
The retirement marks a massive shift for guests who make resort hopping a central part of their seasonal vacation plans. The giant display traditionally served as a major holiday destination, drawing massive crowds of non-resort guests to the property via the monorail line. Many fans are already expressing disappointment over losing the sweet aroma of cinnamon and sugar that used to fill the entire multi-story lobby area.
New Replacements and Unanswered Questions
Instead of rebuilding the giant walk-up structure, Disney’s culinary teams will pivot to a completely new setup. Pastry artists plan to create brand-new miniature gingerbread holiday displays to scatter throughout the resort. Disney noted that similar miniature displays are also in development for several other central Florida resort hotels, with specific details regarding those setups expected to drop later this year.
The new format leaves several lingering questions regarding the resort’s traditional holiday treat sales. In past years, Disney cast members actually worked inside the life-size gingerbread house to sell handmade cookies, standard gingerbread shingles, and seasonal ornaments directly to guests. Disney has not yet clarified if or where those popular holiday snacks will be sold inside the Grand Floridian lobby this winter.
