For over two decades, the remains of River Country have been a ghost story whispered by Walt Disney World fans. Disney’s first water park sat abandoned after its 2001 closure. Nature reclaimed the land, and it remained strictly off-limits to guests. That changed this week as a surprising new tribute officially brought the River Country name back to Bay Lake.
Surprise Discovery at Meadow Swimmin’ Pool
Guests exploring the newly expanded Meadow Swimmin’ Pool area were stunned to find a nostalgic “Easter egg.” Tucked behind a rustic wooden fence is a vintage-style barrel cart. It features a classic camping Mickey Mouse logo. The cart proudly displays the “River Country” name. This marks the first time in 25 years that Disney has officially acknowledged the park in a public area.
Honoring the Legacy of “Old Florida”
This nostalgic nod serves as a bridge between the campground’s heritage and its future. Imagineers clearly wanted to honor the “old Florida” charm that River Country represented. For die-hard fans, this feels like a long-overdue validation. It honors the legendary status of the park where many guests grew up.
New Amenities and Phase 1 Completion
The discovery comes as Disney completes Phase 1 of a massive recreation overhaul. This expansion has effectively doubled the deck space at the Meadow pool. It adds a brand-new zero-entry swimming area and expansive boardwalk seating. New restroom facilities and shaded lounging zones have also debuted for campground guests.
Future Expansion: Pickleball and More
Looking ahead, Phase 2 of the project will bring new tennis and pickleball courts by mid-2026. As the new DVC tower rises next door, these enhancements keep the rustic spirit intact. Whether you are a newcomer or a veteran, the new Meadow expansion is a must-visit.
