Big Thunder Mountain Railroad officially reopened yesterday, May 3, 2026, after a record-breaking 16-month closure. However, the celebration turned into a crisis when a fire broke out on the tracks just hours after the grand reopening. Around 5:45 p.m., visible flames appeared underneath the track in the loading and unloading area. Disney immediately halted the attraction and evacuated all guests from the station and the queue. This unexpected incident temporarily silenced the “Wildest Ride in the Wilderness” on its biggest day in years.

A quick-thinking female Cast Member prevented the situation from becoming a disaster. Guests on the scene captured footage of her deploying a fire extinguisher directly onto the flaming track components. She managed to suppress the fire before the Orange County Fire Rescue or internal fire teams reached the station. Her heroic response saved the ride from significant damage and kept the crowd safe. Social media videos of her bravery began circulating almost immediately among the Disney fan community.

Friction On The Newly Rebuilt Tracks

The fire reportedly started within the ride’s complex braking system. These systems rely on heavy friction to stop the heavy trains, which generates intense heat during operation. Industry experts believe the 16-month refurbishment, which included a full track replacement, contributed to the mechanical failure. New friction-based components often experience “hot spots” during their first day of high-capacity use. The opening day crowds pushed the newly adjusted system to its thermal limits. Despite the dramatic headlines, safety teams found only minimal superficial damage to the loading area. The maintenance crew worked throughout the evening to inspect the braking pads and ensure guest safety. The attraction cleared all inspections and officially reopened to the public at 10:20 p.m. that same night. This rapid turnaround allowed the resort to maintain its scheduled operation for the busy Star Wars Day crowds today, May 4.

The Return Of Rainbow Caverns

The fire did not affect the massive upgrades installed during the long refurbishment period. Guests can now experience a significantly smoother ride thanks to the total track overhaul. The highlight of the update is the brand-new “Rainbow Caverns” scene. This finale features stunning phosphorescent effects that pay tribute to the original Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland attraction. Disney also lowered the height requirement to 38 inches, allowing more young explorers to experience the mountain.
