Walt Disney World guests looking to make a splash this week will have to put their plans on ice. A significant Arctic cold front is sweeping through Central Florida, forcing Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon to shutter its gates once again. The water park is officially scheduled to close from Tuesday, January 27, through Thursday, January 29, 2026.
The 70-Degree Rule
Disney maintains a strict operational policy regarding weather and guest safety. The resort typically closes its water parks whenever daytime highs are forecasted to stay below 70 degrees. This week, Orlando is bracing for a “Florida Freeze.” Temperatures are expected to struggle into the low 60s, while overnight lows will plummet into the mid-30s.
While Disney heats its water to roughly 80 degrees, the “exit transition” into the chilly air creates a safety risk. These freezing winds make it impossible to maintain a comfortable environment for guests in swimwear. Disney officials expect the park to reopen on Friday, January 30, provided the sun returns as predicted.
A Month Of Missing Magic
This latest shutdown marks the fourth time Typhoon Lagoon has closed due to cold weather in January 2026. The park has been closed for more than half of the month so far. This persistent winter chill has been a major disruption for travelers hoping for a tropical escape.
The timing is especially difficult for guests because Blizzard Beach is currently closed for its annual refurbishment. With both parks out of commission, there are currently zero water park options available at Walt Disney World. This also impacts the popular 2026 hotel perk that offers complimentary water park entry on check-in days.
Refurbishment Swap Is Coming
The current weather woes come just before a major operational shift. Typhoon Lagoon is scheduled to begin its own long-term seasonal refurbishment on February 15, 2026. On that same day, Blizzard Beach will finally reopen to the public.
During the upcoming Typhoon Lagoon closure, Disney plans to perform major maintenance on several attractions. This includes a rumored rebuild of the Humunga Kowabunga waterslide. Both parks are not expected to operate simultaneously again until the summer season kicks off on May 26, 2026.
