On this day 38 years ago, Epcot’s Maelstrom officially opened its gates to Walt Disney World guests. The highly anticipated attraction debuted inside the recently completed Norway Pavilion in World Showcase. Visitors flooded the pavilion to experience the park’s newest high-tech boat ride.

Guests climbed into unique watercraft vehicles beautifully patterned after traditional Viking longships. Imagineers originally named the attraction SeaVenture during its early development and construction phases. Disney executives made a last-minute decision to change the name to Maelstrom right before the official grand opening.

The journey took riders past detailed Audio-Animatronic figures highlighting Norwegian mythology and culture. Boats cruised past the Norse god Odin before encountering an angry three-headed troll. The troll cast a spell that sent the longships traveling backward through the track. The boats briefly peeked out over the pavilion’s main walkway before plunging down a 28-foot drop into a stormy North Sea. You can take a closer look at the original attraction in the video below:

A massive hand-painted mural greeted guests inside the attraction’s loading station. Sharp-eyed fans frequently looked at the artwork to spot two famous hidden Mickeys. The mural famously depicted a Viking warrior wearing Mickey Mouse ears and another figure wearing a Mickey Mouse wristwatch.

Maelstrom permanently closed its doors on October 5, 2014, after a successful 26-year run. Workers completely transformed the space to make room for the Frozen Ever After attraction. The current princess-themed ride still utilizes the exact same track layout and boat path as the historic 1988 classic.
