Disney may be poised for a return to traditional 2D hand-drawn animation! Walt Disney Animation Studios Chief Creative Officer Jared Bush recently teased the potential shift in an interview after over a decade without a fully 2D-animated feature film from the studio.

This marks a significant potential direction change for the studio, which last released a fully 2D-animated film with 2011’s Winnie the Pooh. Supporting this speculation, animation legend Ron Clements, co-director of classics like The Little Mermaid and Aladdin, has been brought out of retirement. His role involves mentoring current animators, specifically addressing a generational “loss of know-how” in traditional hand-drawn techniques.

A return to 2D animation offers distinct advantages. In a CGI-heavy market, hand-drawn animation brings unique artistic freedom. It creates a special visual identity. Its timeless charm can set a film apart. Also, 2D can often save money on production. Timelines are sometimes faster compared to complex 3D features. This especially applies to films produced entirely in the U.S. like Disney’s.

Bush himself expresses a strong love for 2D. He notes current 2D artists do “bonkers amazing things.” Bush emphasizes stylistic shifts need a “deep narrative reason.” Animation, he says, must always serve the story. No new 2D feature films are officially announced. Frozen 3 and Zootopia 2 remain in 3D. However, 2D talent remains. Projects like the Tiana series show an evolving landscape.

This renewed focus on 2D is not just about nostalgia. It embraces artistic diversity. It honors the craft that built Disney’s century-long legacy. Masters like Ron Clements now guide new talent. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ future could blend traditional and digital artistry. This continues enchanting audiences worldwide.
