On this day 28 years ago, Disney’s Animal Kingdom officially opened its gates as the fourth theme park at the Walt Disney World Resort. The grand opening occurred on April 22, 1998, which was also Earth Day. This monumental expansion marked a new chapter in Disney history. It introduced a “new species” of theme park that focused heavily on conservation and the natural world.

A Wild Opening Day Ceremony

Michael Eisner and Roy E. Disney were both on hand to dedicate the park at 8:17 a.m. The ceremony took place at the Harambe Theater in the Africa section of the park. Eisner’s dedication plaque famously welcomes guests to a “kingdom of animals, real, ancient, and imagined.” Because of the high anticipation, the park opened its gates at 6:00 a.m. It reached its initial capacity of 35,000 guests in just 75 minutes.

The Original 1998 Park Layout

At over 500 acres, Animal Kingdom remains the largest Disney theme park ever built. On opening day, it featured five distinct lands: The Oasis, Safari Village, Camp Minnie-Mickey, Africa, and DinoLand U.S.A. Interestingly, Asia was still under construction during the 1998 debut and did not open until the following year. Camp Minnie-Mickey was originally intended to be a placeholder for the never-built “Beastly Kingdom,” which was eventually replaced by Pandora – The World of Avatar.

Earth Day 2026 Anniversary Updates

Today, on its 28th birthday, the park is celebrating in a much quieter fashion. While rare character meet-and-greets were common for Earth Day in the past, Disney has largely scaled back those offerings for 2026. However, the stilt-walking character DiVine debuted a special look today by trading her green leaves for spring flowers. Additionally, the “Talking Dug” interactive experience officially resumed appearances at the Tree of Life today to celebrate the milestone.

Looking Toward a New Era

As the park turns 28, it is currently undergoing its most significant transformation since the 2017 opening of Pandora. Construction is moving quickly on the Tropical Americas project, which will replace DinoLand U.S.A. with a new land featuring Encanto and Indiana Jones. While the park has evolved significantly since Michael Eisner first spoke those famous words in 1998, the core mission of conservation remains at the heart of the experience.
