A new generation is officially set to journey back to the Ivory Tower. After a massive global bidding war, a new live-action film franchise based on Michael Ende’s beloved 1979 novel, The Neverending Story, is in development. This project marks the first time in decades that the rights have been secured for a major cinematic readaptation of the classic fantasy tale.
A Faithful Readaptation, Not a Remake
While many fans grew up with the 1984 film, this new project is not a direct remake of that version. Producers have clarified that this is a fresh readaptation of Michael Ende’s original novel. Because the book is so dense, the team plans to produce a multi-film franchise. This will allow them to include many characters and subplots—like the Desert of Colors and the Battle for the Ivory Tower—that were missing from previous adaptations.
The Creative Powerhouses Behind Fantastica
The revival is a joint venture between See-Saw Films and Michael Ende Productions. See-Saw Films is the prestige studio responsible for award-winning hits like The King’s Speech, Lion, and Slow Horses. Producers Iain Canning and Emile Sherman are leading the project alongside Roman Hocke and Ralph Gassmann of Ende’s estate. This partnership ensures that the author’s original vision remains at the heart of the new films.
Production Status and Modern Spectacle
The project is currently in the active development phase. The producers are currently meeting with writers and directors to find the right creative team to bring Fantastica to life. Although the team hasn’t set filming dates yet, they expect the production to be a global endeavor. The producers have even expressed interest in filming in Germany, the location where Michael Ende wrote the original book and Wolfgang Petersen produced the 1984 movie.
Debunking the Rumors
With excitement at an all-time high, several rumors have circulated online. Fans created the viral “trailers” and posters suggesting that J.J. Abrams is directing or that stars like Timothée Chalamet have joined the cast. Similarly, rumors of a stop-motion version from LAIKA Studios are incorrect. The producers have confirmed that the official project is a live-action series. As of now, the studio has not announced an official cast or director.
