Universal Orlando confirmed the Stardust Racers will reopen on Saturday, October 4, 2025. The dual-launch roller coaster returns to service at the new Epic Universe park. The reopening follows a two-week closure stemming from the tragic death of 32-year-old guest Kevin Rodriguez Zavala on September 17. The incident and the park’s swift return fueled a safety debate, ahead of the official Stardust Racers Reopening.

Universal Confirms Ride Integrity

Universal Orlando Resort President Karen Irwin confirmed the review’s results in an internal statement. She noted the ride systems functioned properly throughout the entire incident, from boarding to the station return. Furthermore, the internal investigation concluded that Universal Team Members followed all operational procedures. An independent roller coaster engineering expert and the manufacturer reportedly supported this finding.

The Orange County Medical Examiner ruled Mr. Rodriguez Zavala’s cause of death an accident, resulting from multiple blunt impact injuries. An incident report indicated the guest had a pre-existing spinal disability. The ride’s safety guide clearly advises against riding with back, neck, or similar physical conditions. However, the case raises serious questions about how Universal communicates and enforces those warnings.

Family and Attorney Criticize Reopening

Despite Universal’s internal findings, civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing Mr. Rodriguez Zavala’s family, publicly criticized the decision to reopen. They urged Universal to keep the attraction closed until a full, transparent investigation is complete. Crump contends that if the ride functioned “as intended,” the design itself may be inherently dangerous to many guests. He also noted that multiple people, some without known disabilities, have contacted his office alleging injuries from the coaster.

In preparation for the Stardust Racers Reopening, Universal stated it is updating queue signage. This update will more clearly and forcefully reinforce existing warnings and eligibility requirements. This step intends to help guests with pre-existing conditions make an informed decision before boarding. The high-speed coaster reaches heights of 133 feet and speeds of up to 62 mph. The tragic event leaves the theme park community divided as the popular attraction prepares to launch trains once again.
