A “Wicked” themed attraction or entire land could be coming to a Universal Studios park in the near future. While no official announcement has been made, Universal Destinations & Experiences CEO Mark Woodbury publicly confirmed the film’s source material is “a theme park waiting to happen,” positioning the IP for a significant new presence at the resorts.
The Immersive Retail Experience
Universal currently builds immense guest excitement through a new concept: “Wicked: The Experience.” This immersive retail activation has opened at both Universal Studios Hollywood and Orlando. It is far more than a typical gift shop. Guests can walk through spaces that feature recreated iconic settings, such as Shiz University and the famous yellow brick road. The experience is designed to immerse visitors. It features authentic costumes and props from the upcoming movie, alongside exclusive themed merchandise and apparel.
The CEO’s Secret Plans
Woodbury’s public comments offer the strongest confirmation of the franchise’s theme park potential. He revealed that he has “secret plans for significant attractions.” This confirms that Wicked is not just a passing promotional tie-in. His statements give high credence to the swirling fan and reporter speculation. The fact that the top executive publicly affirms the film’s IP potential suggests the studio has deep, long-term intentions for the property.
The most popular theory suggests a full-scale Land of Oz based on Wicked will be the first major expansion for the upcoming Universal Epic Universe in Orlando. The IP fits perfectly within the new park’s fantasy themes. Universal Studios collaborates closely with its film studio. They turn cinematic IP into groundbreaking theme park experiences. This move follows the precedent set in previous expansions, although Universal Studios Japan did previously operate a smaller “Land of Oz.”
The investment in the franchise is not limited to the U.S. parks. Themed celebrations and unique Wicked experiences have also been confirmed for Universal Studios Singapore and Universal Studios Japan. This confirms Universal views Wicked as a global, permanent asset. This beloved story will soon evolve from a temporary experience to a full, permanent attraction that visitors can enjoy for years.
