Disney+ is discontinuing support for select older Apple devices. This change is the result of an app update that raises minimum operating system requirements. Subscribers using older iPhones, iPads, and Apple TV models who cannot update their software will lose the ability to stream directly from the app. The company is phasing out support for the outdated hardware starting on December 1, 2025.

Why Is the Change Happening?

The minimum OS requirements increase due to an upcoming Disney+ app update. The change is necessary because older devices lack the technical capability required to run the newest app version. New app versions allow Disney to integrate modern features and enhanced performance. This includes features like 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, and necessary security protocols, which older hardware cannot support effectively.

The New Minimum Requirements

To continue using the dedicated Disney+ app, users must ensure their devices meet the new minimums. iPhones and iPads must be running iOS 16.5 or later. This requirement will exclude older models that stopped receiving software updates before that version. For Apple TV devices, the minimum operating system is tvOS 16 or later. This means models that preceded the Apple TV HD (4th generation) or Apple TV 4K may soon be excluded.

What Devices Are Affected?

The decision is based on an OS cutoff, not a specific model list. While Disney has sent out emails to subscribers, they have been criticized for failing to specify the exact devices impacted. Users must check their current operating system version to determine their status. If a device cannot update to the required minimum OS version, the dedicated app will cease to function directly on that hardware.

For those with older Apple TV hardware that will be impacted, a simple solution exists. The content can still be accessed indirectly via a workaround. Users can stream Disney+ by using AirPlay or screen mirroring from a compatible, newer iPhone or iPad running the correct, modern OS. This allows viewers to continue enjoying their subscription through the existing hardware.
