On this day 101 years ago, Walt Disney married one of his very first employees, Lillian Marie Bounds, in an intimate ceremony in Lewiston, Idaho. The quiet wedding took place at 918 Third Street, which was the private home of Lillian’s brother, Sid O. Bounds, who served as the local fire chief. Because Lillian’s father had already passed away, her uncle stepped in to officially give the bride away during the afternoon service.
The small gathering required a few close family members to help pull the event together on short notice. Reverend D.J.W. Somerville performed the legal ceremony for the young couple. Meanwhile, Lillian’s sister, Hazel Sewell, and her brother, Sydney, acted as the official witnesses to sign the marriage certificate. This simple day in the Pacific Northwest marked the official beginning of a lifelong romance that lasted until Walt’s passing.
From the Nez Perce Reservation to Los Angeles
Before meeting her future husband, Lillian had a very unique and rugged upbringing in the region. She was born in Spalding, Idaho, and grew up on the Nez Perce Indian Reservation in Lapwai. Her father worked hard to support the family by serving as both a local blacksmith and a federal marshal. These early experiences gave her a grounded perspective that she carried with her throughout her entire life.
In 1923, Lillian decided to head out west and moved to Los Angeles, California. Shortly after arriving in the growing city, she landed a historic job at the fledgling Walt Disney Studio. She started out serving as a secretary and working as an “inker” of animated cels. This fateful job placement made Lillian one of Walt’s very first official studio employees and sparked their relationship.

Their marriage became the emotional bedrock of the entire Disney empire for decades to come. Lillian was famously known as the one who convinced Walt to change his new cartoon character’s name to “Mickey Mouse” instead of his original choice, “Mortimer.” Her sharp instincts and quiet support anchored Walt through his heaviest financial risks and creative challenges.
