The “wildest ride in the wilderness” just got a lot quieter for the spring season. Big Thunder Mountain at Magic Kingdom will stay closed longer than anyone expected. Incoming CEO Josh D’Amaro is reportedly overseeing a massive shift in park schedules. This news effectively ends hopes for a March return of the high-profile coaster.
The Permit Reveal
A new official filing confirms the bad news. Disney just extended the construction permit for Big Thunder Mountain from March 13 all the way to August 31, 2026. Disney often adds “buffer time” to these documents, but a five-month extension is a huge deal. If you planned a Spring Break trip to ride the rails, you will need a backup plan.
Construction Chaos in Frontierland
The delay isn’t just about the ride itself. A massive construction zone currently surrounds the mountain. Crews are clearing land behind the ride for the upcoming Villains Land. Even closer to the tracks, workers are moving dirt for Piston Peak, the new Cars-themed expansion.
The main entrance to the ride is currently a dirt slope. Disney cannot safely let thousands of guests into that corner of the park yet. Walkways and construction walls must move before the gates can open.
What’s New Inside the Mountain?
The good news is that the wait will be worth it. This is a “top-to-bottom” rebuild. Disney wants this ride to last for decades.
- Rainbow Caverns: The famous opening lift hill is changing. It will now feature glowing pools and shimmering stalactites. This scene takes inspiration from a classic Disneyland attraction.
- A Smoother Ride: Crews replaced the entire steel track. The ride will still be thrilling, but it will feel much smoother on your back.
- New Tech: Every train is brand new. The “wildlife” animatronics throughout the mountain are also getting major tech upgrades.
When Will It Actually Open?
Disney still officially points to a “Spring 2026” opening. However, the new permits tell a different story. Expect the ride to remain closed through the busy spring season. A late June or July opening seems more likely.
On the bright side, fans have spotted the geysers testing. Trains are also cycling on the tracks again. The mountain is “alive,” but it needs a little more time.
