Waymo Self-Driving Cars

The “Disney bubble” just got a lot more futuristic. A fleet of cars with no one behind the wheel officially arrived on property today. Waymo self-driving cars now offer autonomous rides at Walt Disney World. Guests can summon these driverless vehicles through a smartphone app. These “Level 4” autonomous cars have no human in the driver’s seat. Instead, a complex system of sensors and AI navigates the resort’s private roads. This brings a “ghost car” experience to the streets of Disney Springs and surrounding resorts.

Navigating the Resort Loop

The initial service area focuses on a specific “resort loop.” This ensures a smooth integration with existing Disney traffic. The primary hub for the launch is Disney Springs. Dedicated pick-up zones sit near the Strawberry and Watermelon parking lots. The service also extends to the EPCOT and Hollywood Studios resort area. This includes Disney’s BoardWalk Inn and the Yacht & Beach Club Resorts. The cars do not drop off at theme park gates yet. Guests can transfer to the Skyliner or buses from these central hubs.

A True Tomorrowland Experience

Riding in these vehicles feels like a scene from Tomorrowland. The front seats remain empty during every trip. The steering wheel moves on its own to navigate complex turns. Passengers sit in the back of an all-electric Jaguar I-PACE. Internal touchscreens show a 3D reconstruction of everything the car “sees.” This includes other vehicles, pedestrians, and Disney characters. The vehicle requires zero human intervention from start to finish. This level of autonomy sets Waymo apart from standard driver-assist features.

Safety and Weather Intelligence

Safety is the top priority for this rollout. Waymo’s 5th-generation technology handles sudden tropical downpours with ease. A suite of Lidar, radar, and cameras provides a constant 360-degree view. Data shows Waymo self-driving cars are safer than human drivers. They have 11 times fewer serious injury collisions. Waymo specifically mapped Disney’s private road infrastructure for this launch. The AI recognizes the resort’s unique purple and red directional signage. It also monitors high-traffic pedestrian crossings across the property.

How to Access the Pilot Program

The service is currently in a “limited public” phase. Not everyone can hail a ride immediately. Guests must download the Waymo One app to join the waitlist. Waymo issues invitations to users on a rolling basis. They plan to scale toward a full public opening later this year. Pricing is comparable to standard rideshare services like Uber. Notably, no tipping is expected or required. There is no human operator to tip.
