Universal Orlando Resort officially confirmed the future of its skyline on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. The resort announced that a massive new coaster, Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, will officially replace the retired Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit. Scheduled to debut in 2027, this high-octane attraction promises to be the fastest ride in Universal’s global portfolio.
A High-Speed Drifting Experience
The new coaster will reach blistering speeds of up to 72 mph. Its most innovative feature is the 360-degree drifting technology, which allows ride vehicles to rotate independently. This movement simulates the screeching turns and “drifts” made famous by the blockbuster film franchise.
Standing as the ride’s centerpiece is a staggering 170-foot vertical spike. This element will launch riders nearly 17 stories into the air directly over the edge of Universal CityWalk. While a similar coaster is set to open at Universal Studios Hollywood, officials confirmed the Orlando version features a completely unique track layout.
Out With the Old, In With the New
The arrival of Hollywood Drift marks the end of an era for two existing attractions. The new coaster will occupy the prime real estate left behind by Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, which permanently closed in August 2025. Fans have long speculated on what would fill the iconic vertical lift hill’s footprint.
Additionally, Universal confirmed that the screen-based Fast & Furious — Supercharged will permanently close in 2027. This news has been met with excitement from the fan community, as many felt the franchise deserved a more thrilling, physical representation in the park.
Building Post-Epic Momentum
This announcement serves as Universal’s first major move following the massive opening of Universal Epic Universe in 2025. By overhauling the original Universal Studios Florida park, the resort is ensuring its classic gates remain a top-tier destination for thrill-seekers.
