The animation world is in mourning following the death of Roger Allers, the visionary filmmaker who co-directed Disney’s 1994 masterpiece, The Lion King. Allers passed away on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at his home in Santa Monica, California. A Disney spokesperson confirmed that the legendary artist died following a short illness.

A Pillar of the Disney Renaissance

Roger Allers was a defining force behind the “Disney Renaissance,” a period that saw the studio return to critical and commercial dominance. Before stepping into the director’s chair, Allers served as the Head of Story for Beauty and the Beast. He also provided pivotal storyboard work for The Little Mermaid and Aladdin.

His greatest directorial achievement came alongside Rob Minkoff with The Lion King. The film became a global phenomenon, earning nearly $1 billion at the box office and remaining the highest-grossing film of 1994. Allers later adapted the story for the Broadway stage, which earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical.

Tributes from Disney Leadership

Disney CEO Bob Iger paid tribute to the filmmaker in a statement, calling Allers a “creative visionary” whose work will live on for generations. “He understood the power of great storytelling—how unforgettable characters, emotion, and music can come together to create something timeless,” Iger noted.

Longtime friend and collaborator Dave Bossert also shared his heartbreak on social media. Bossert revealed that he had been trading emails with Allers just a week prior while the director was traveling in Egypt. He described Allers as one of the kindest people in the industry, noting that his massive success never went to his head.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in New York and raised in Arizona, Allers fell in love with animation at age five after seeing Peter Pan. Throughout his career, he worked on diverse projects ranging from the original Tron to Sony’s Open Season. He also directed the Oscar-nominated short The Little Matchgirl and the 2014 feature The Prophet.

Roger Allers is survived by his husband, Genaro Pereira; his former wife, Leslee Hackenson; and their two children, Leah and Aidan. His daughter, Leah, is currently working on a documentary to preserve her father’s incredible life story and artistic contributions.
