The Jungle Cruise adventure has officially been cut short. The highly anticipated sequel, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, is now considered dead at Disney. Both actors recently confirmed the project is “not moving forward,” attributing the final decision to a strategic shift under Disney’s new leadership.

Stars Confirm the Project’s End

Johnson attributed the final decision to changes in the executive suites. New leadership reviewed the film slate for future profitability. He provided context on the studio’s internal thinking. Johnson told the interviewer, “New leadership looked at that property and thought, We did it once, not sure if we should revisit it again. The focus is changing post-COVID.”

Emily Blunt echoed Johnson’s comments during the same interview. She stated she understood the studio’s perspective regarding their financial planning. Blunt accepted the decision with good humor. She simply said, “They did not want to set sail again, and that’s fine. It was an amazing ride, and we’re happy with the one we made.”

The Original Film’s Financial Context

The original 2021 film failed to meet pre-pandemic box office expectations. Disney released the film under a hybrid model during the pandemic. It was available simultaneously in theaters and via Disney+ Premier Access. The film ultimately grossed $221 million worldwide. It added $66 million from the Disney+ Premier Access fees.

This financial result proved disappointing for the studio. The combined budget for production and marketing reportedly exceeded $360 million. The disappointing return made the sequel a high financial risk. New leadership was unwilling to move forward with the expensive venture.

From Greenlight to Cancellation

Disney initially greenlit the sequel quickly. The studio announced the plan in August 2021. Johnson and Blunt were confirmed to return along with the original director and writer. However, the development quickly stalled. No substantial updates emerged in the following years, signaling the project’s quiet demise well before the official announcement. The decision reflects Disney’s current focus on securing guaranteed breakout hits. The studio is prioritizing IP that can deliver strong financial returns in the current theatrical environment.
