The ultimate movie rumor is now a reality. Nintendo has officially released the first set photos from the live-action The Legend of Zelda film. The pictures feature stars Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link, seen in full costume. This release officially confirms the start of production in New Zealand. It follows days after a fan set leak revealed unofficial footage of the movie’s main actors.

A Tale of Two Timelines in Costume Design

Designers gave Princess Zelda a modern look. She wears a blue tunic/dress and dark green leggings. This style strongly resembles the Champion’s Tunic from Breath of the Wild. The details confirm her role. Her outfit features a subtle Triforce pattern. She is also seen wielding a bow and arrow, positioning her as a warrior princess.

Link’s costume embraces a more traditional aesthetic. He sports a dark green, frayed tunic over a cream undershirt. This rugged, darker look clearly references his look in Twilight Princess. The simple outfit hints at his humble origins before his quest. Notably, the iconic pointy cap and the Master Sword are not visible in these first stills. Take a look at the awesome phots below:

Official Production and Confirmed Details

Nintendo provided a direct statement on the production start. Creator Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed filming is underway in a “lush, natural setting.” He asked fans to wait patiently for the highly anticipated release. The studio currently schedules the movie to arrive in theaters on May 7, 2027.

The production team features several prominent names. Wes Ball is directing the movie. Producers include Miyamoto and Avi Arad, the former CEO of Marvel Studios. The production also sparked a major casting rumor. Severance actress Dichen Lachman is widely rumored to be playing Impa, Zelda’s aide. Nintendo has not yet confirmed this specific casting.

Fans see the high-quality costumes as a successful and faithful blend of different game aesthetics. This initial glimpse is just the beginning of the long wait for the 2027 film.
