Roger Rabbit

The creator of Toontown, author Gary K. Wolf, has successfully reclaimed the rights to Roger Rabbit and the related characters from Disney. This shocking shift brings one of the most beloved and groundbreaking film properties under the full creative control of its original author. It immediately opens the door to new projects that fans have awaited for decades.

This rights transfer occurred approximately one year ago via the 35-Year Copyright Reversion Clause. This legal provision in the 1976 Copyright Act allows creators to reclaim ownership of their work after 35 years. Wolf confirmed that the process with The Walt Disney Company was surprisingly civil and straightforward. Disney now retains ownership only of the original 1988 film, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, but Wolf controls the ability to develop all new stories, films, and merchandise based on the characters and his novels.

A New Vision for Jessica Rabbit

Wolf has revealed that the project “furthest along” in development is a live-action Jessica Rabbit movie. This new story will adapt his 2022 novel, Jessica Rabbit: XERIOUS Business. The novel serves as an origin story for the iconic character. In this reimagining, Jessica begins as a human named Jessica Krupnick who eventually becomes a Toon secret agent. This is a dramatic departure from the movie and gives Wolf a chance to expand on Jessica’s character depth.

Upholding the Original Quality

The author recognizes the high bar set by the original Oscar-winning film. Wolf stated that any sequels or new projects must “at least match the quality of the original movie.” This promise extends to production value, script content, and character development. This new era of creative freedom comes after years of rumors that Disney would never pursue a sequel, partly fueled by the company’s move toward more child-friendly content.

Despite the split, Wolf remains open to collaboration. He stated he would “love for Disney to participate” and partner with him on future projects. He hopes to work again with the core group of surviving creative minds who brought the original film to life. This signals an exciting new beginning for Toontown fans hoping for fresh, high-quality stories.
