Walt Disney’s private plane has officially returned to its former glory. After sitting in a Florida field for over a decade, the aircraft has completed a massive, multi-year restoration project and is now open to the public.
This restoration marks a significant turnaround for the aircraft decommissioned in 1992. Walt Disney’s legendary Grumman Gulfstream I, widely known as “The Mouse,” was eventually moved to a storage field in 2014. Years of exposure to the intense Florida heat and humidity caused significant damage to both the interior and exterior, leaving the structure in desperate need of help.
A Confidential Mobile Office
Beyond simple transportation, the aircraft served as a private, high-altitude office for Walt Disney. Purchased in 1963, it logged over 20,000 flight hours. Walt utilized this space to conduct sensitive studio business away from the public eye. He even performed aerial surveys for the land that became Walt Disney World. Bringing the plane back to life required a massive joint effort from the Walt Disney Archives, Imagineering, and the museum. Since the original engines were gone, teams stripped the entire vessel. They reconstructed it from the ground up using original 1960s specifications.
Authentic Midcentury Details
The cabin features a distinct midcentury modern aesthetic with cream, rust, and beige tones. It remains filled with subtle, Mickey-themed accents, such as custom cocktail napkins, matchbooks, and a stylized cockpit clock. Designers carefully curated each detail to mirror the exact experience of flying with Walt during his most prolific era.
A unique personal touch remains visible in the clear, floor-to-ceiling plastic divider separating the main cabin. This divider still holds leaves collected from the Disney family’s backyard, serving as a preserved time capsule. Disney fans can now see this incredible piece of history in person, as it is officially open for tours at the Palm Springs Air Museum.
