Disneyland’s highly anticipated 70th-anniversary celebration on July 17, 2025, saw the debut of “Walt Disney – A Magical Life,” a new show at the Main Street Opera House featuring a cutting-edge Audio-Animatronic figure of Walt Disney himself. However, the excitement was short-lived when the animatronic experienced a malfunction just hours after its grand unveiling.

An Unveiling and a Hiccup

The new show, intended to be a heartfelt tribute to the park’s visionary founder, quickly garnered attention for its incredibly lifelike Walt Disney figure. This advanced animatronic was designed to perform intricate movements and deliver a captivating performance. Unfortunately, the technology encountered an unexpected hiccup early in its opening day.

The Moment of Malfunction

At approximately 10:30 a.m., a mere two and a half hours after Disneyland opened its gates for its milestone anniversary, the Walt Disney animatronic malfunctioned during a key moment in the show. The incident occurred as the figure attempted its most complex action: stepping forward from a leaning position at a desk. As you can see below:

Show Halts, Guests Evacuate

Immediately, the stage plunged into darkness, and the show’s audio ceased. Interestingly, some attendees noted that the animatronic Walt’s mouth continued to move even after the sound cut out. The curtains were promptly closed, and park personnel informed guests of “technical difficulties,” leading to the theater’s evacuation.

Echoes of 1955 and Public Reaction

The malfunction sparked immediate reactions. Park guests expressed disappointment at the setback on such a significant day. Online discussions quickly drew parallels to Disneyland’s notoriously chaotic opening day in 1955. That debut also suffered numerous operational issues. Humorous comments even surfaced. Some jokingly suggested Walt himself might have “pulled the plug,” displeased with the animatronic’s portrayal. This sentiment mirrored prior “uncanny valley” criticisms the figure received. Walt’s granddaughter, Joanna Miller, had also raised concerns before its public debut.

Quick Recovery and Future Operations

Despite the opening day hiccup, “Walt Disney – A Magical Life” quickly recovered. It temporarily shut down for less than an hour. The show thankfully reopened later that same afternoon. It has since operated, primarily using a Virtual Queue system for guest access. The initial malfunction caused a stir, but the quick recovery allowed guests to continue experiencing this new tribute to Walt Disney. The 70th-anniversary celebrations continued.
