On this day 59 years ago, Walt Disney’s final masterpiece officially opened at Disneyland. While this moment became an instant success, it was also a bittersweet milestone for the company. Walt Disney had passed away just three months before the grand opening. This was the final attraction he personally oversaw and meticulously developed. He remained heavily involved in the project until the very end of his life.

From Wax to Water

Originally, Walt envisioned a very different attraction for New Orleans Square. He planned for a simple walk-through wax museum instead of a ride. However, the success of it’s a small world changed his mind. Walt chose a high-capacity water flume to tell the story. It quickly became the most complex Audio-Animatronics project ever attempted.

Opening Day Pirate Raid

Disneyland pulled out all the stops for the 1967 celebration. The festivities actually began with a rowdy pirate raid near the lagoon. Actors dressed as pirates clambered onto a ship in the harbor. They then disembarked and used a battering ram on the attraction’s doors. This dramatic entrance officially welcomed the first guests inside.

Highly Realistic Innovation

Walt was very protective of the atmosphere within this new land. He even delayed the Blue Bayou’s opening for several weeks. He insisted the restaurant remain closed until the ride was perfect. Furthermore, the final city scene was incredibly realistic for the time. The fire effects were so good they nearly fooled the local fire department.

A Legacy That Conquered the World

The ride’s massive success cannot be overstated by fans. It cost approximately $8 million to complete the entire project. This was half the cost of the New Orleans Square expansion. This single attraction eventually launched a multi-billion dollar film franchise. It also paved the way for several additional versions at Disney parks worldwide.
