A massive piece of Disney history officially ended on January 6, 2008. For nearly 19 years, the park in Florida carried the name Disney-MGM Studios. However, as the clock struck midnight, the “MGM” branding disappeared forever. Starting the next morning, the park welcomed guests as Disney’s Hollywood Studios, marking a permanent shift in the resort’s identity.

The MGM Licensing Agreement

Many guests originally assumed that Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer owned or operated the park. In reality, Disney simply entered a licensing deal with MGM in 1985. This agreement allowed Disney to use the famous lion logo and the MGM name to give the park instant “Hollywood” credibility. MGM had no part in designing the attractions or managing the daily operations of the studio.

The relationship eventually grew complicated and led to several legal disputes. MGM famously sued Disney over the use of the name at the MGM Grand hotel in Las Vegas. These tensions, combined with the end of the 20-year contract, made a name change inevitable. Disney decided to move away from the “working studio” concept to focus on their own growing library of intellectual properties.

A New Direction for the Park

The name change signaled a broader transformation for the park’s theme. During the MGM era, the Earffel Tower served as the primary icon to represent a functioning production facility. By the time of the rebranding, the Sorcerer’s Hat had taken center stage. This shift moved the park away from a behind-the-scenes look at moviemaking and toward immersive “movie worlds.”

Dropping the MGM name gave Disney total creative control over the park’s future. This freedom eventually paved the way for massive expansions like Toy Story Land and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Today, the park celebrates the “Hollywood that never was and always will be” without the need for outside licensing.
