Thailand’s government is spearheading a major effort to attract Disneyland to Southeast Asia, proposing a world-class amusement park for the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC). The proposal is being led by Transport Minister Piphat Ratchakitprakarn, who has framed the project as a vital “Magnet Project” for the region. The plan includes developing both the theme park and a new 80,000-seat national stadium concurrently.

The Southeast Asia Magnet

The proposed location for the theme park is the Pattaya-Chonburi area. The primary goal is to drive massive tourism and ensure the financial viability of the ongoing High-Speed Rail (HSR) project. This HSR line will link three major airports, requiring significant passenger volume. Preliminary studies suggest the necessary land required would not exceed 3,000 rai (approximately 1,185 acres).

The government’s push, however, faces challenges rooted in history. This is not the first time Thailand has pursued a Disneyland. A proposal in 2001 reportedly failed after a Disney representative cited concerns over the Thai government’s excessive conditions and corruption. Today, Thailand faces regional competition, with China and Vietnam currently favored for many new global mega theme park investments.

Hurdles and Investment

Industry experts suggest Thailand must overcome significant investment barriers to secure a deal. The country needs to amend existing laws regarding tax structures and infrastructure support. This contrasts sharply with successful Asian Disney resorts in Shanghai and Hong Kong, where local governments offered intensive support, including reclaiming land and building dedicated rail lines.

The theme park idea is also part of a political shift. It is gaining traction as a family-oriented alternative to a previous proposal that included a controversial legal casino complex. While the political will is strong, the project is still in the feasibility study stage. Disney has yet to make any official commitment or investment announcement.
