Disney’s Animal Kingdom announced the passing of Gino the gorilla, one of its oldest and most beloved residents, at 44 years old. Gino, a western lowland gorilla, was an opening-day animal at the park. He would have celebrated his 45th birthday in December. Tributes poured in from park officials and fans alike, honoring his gentle spirit and leadership.

A Legacy of Family and Leadership

Gino the gorilla was the respected silverback and troop leader for generations at the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. He leaves behind a significant legacy, including 14 offspring. Two of his children, Grace and Ada, continue to live at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Gino was known as a “phenomenal dad.” He played with his youngsters and offered the troop a gentle hand.

Groundbreaking Contributions to Science

Beyond his role in the troop, Gino the gorilla made vital contributions to science. He was one of the first gorillas globally to undergo cardiac ultrasounds without anesthesia. This groundbreaking method has significantly improved heart health monitoring for gorillas worldwide. His calm nature during these procedures helped advance veterinary care for his critically endangered species.

A Champion for Conservation

Gino the gorilla also served as a powerful ambassador for conservation. Western lowland gorillas face critical threats in the wild. His presence at the park helped educate countless visitors. He connected them with real-world efforts to protect his species through the Gorilla Species Survival Program. Gino truly championed these global conservation initiatives.

A Lasting Impact

His impact stretched beyond the scientific community and his family. Guests often saw his playful side through the viewing panel. Staff members adored his unique personality. Former Imagineer Joe Rohde, who helped create Animal Kingdom, remembered Gino. He pictured him “wandering peacefully beneath the trees, a creature in the midst of his kingdom.” Gino’s legacy will inspire future conservation efforts.
