Prime Video is preparing to send fans down a new Yellow Brick Road. This is thanks to the announcement of its latest series, Dorothy. This project is a contemporary, music-infused Young Adult (YA) retelling of L. Frank Baum’s classic tale. Adding a surprising twist to the creative team are executive producers Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton. They bring their music and television experience to the beloved fantasy story.
A Modern Manhattan Retelling
The upcoming series pulls Dorothy out of dusty old Kansas. It then drops her into modern-day Manhattan. The concept uses the original story’s famed Yellow Brick Road as a powerful metaphor. This path will represent the complex challenges and critical choices young adults face in their lives today. It is an approach designed to make the century-old source material—L. Frank Baum’s original books—feel current and relevant for a new generation of viewers.
The creative vision comes from series creator Gina Matthews, known for producing films like 13 Going on 30 and Isn’t It Romantic. Her history with the hit teen comedy series Popular makes her a strong fit for the YA genre. Stefani, a three-time Grammy winner, noted the project’s appeal. She said, “It’s a creative and modern take on a classic. Being part of something that blends music, emotion, and the character of Dorothy is inspiring to me.”
Thematic Focus and Release Context
Creator Gina Matthews explained that the story resonates now more than ever. She stated, “Dorothy is a symbol of strength who shows us that with a little kindness—and a lot of grit—we can not only achieve great things but also lift up those around us.” This thematic focus promises a story centered on resilience and community support. The show moves forward as audience interest in the Oz property is exceptionally high. This is largely due to the theatrical release of the two-part film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, Wicked.
The series is currently in development at Prime Video. The producers have yet to announce a cast. The streaming service has not provided a production timeline or a premiere date. Fans will need to wait a little longer before they get to meet this modern Dorothy.
