Construction crews mounted the blue landmark onto the exterior of The Magic of Disney Animation building. This surprise addition marks a major step in the overhaul of Animation Courtyard. While the new hat is smaller than the 2015 version, its return has already sparked fan excitement. It now serves as the primary visual anchor for this reimagined section of the park.
A Tribute To Disney’s Burbank Studios
This new hat does not replicate the massive icon that Disney removed in 2015. Instead, Imagineers designed this scaled-down version to honor the Roy E. Disney Animation building in California. The design mirrors the architecture of the actual Disney Animation headquarters in Burbank. This choice supports the park’s new thematic direction for this specific area. By using this design, Disney leans into a “real studio” aesthetic for visiting guests.
The Arrival Of Walt Disney Studios Courtyard
The installation signals the transition of Animation Courtyard into the Walt Disney Studios Courtyard. This rebranding makes the area feel like a functioning production lot. Disney also revealed that the courtyard will feature character handprints in the concrete. Icons like Hercules, Stitch, and Cinderella will leave signatures and prints near the entrance. This feature copies the famous celebrity handprints found at the park’s Chinese Theater.
New Interactive Magic For Guests
The Magic of Disney Animation building will host several new experiences starting this summer. A highlight of the expansion includes a drawing class with an advanced animatronic Olaf. Guests can also visit a dedicated theater to watch the “Once Upon A Studio” short film. For younger visitors, crews are currently building an Alice in Wonderland themed play area. These additions offer more interactive options for families exploring the new courtyard.
Official Opening Dates And Timeline
Fans will soon experience the full Walt Disney Studios Courtyard for themselves. Disney scheduled the area to officially open to the public on May 26, 2026. While the courtyard will be ready then, some building interiors will open later this summer. Disney expects to share more character meet-and-greet details in the coming weeks. For now, the sight of the Sorcerer Hat marks a welcome return for longtime park fans.
