A brand-new live-action television series centered on Mary Poppins is currently in early development, spearheaded by producer Tom Winchester through his independent studio, Pure Fiction Television. Backed by See-Saw Films and the UK talent agency Hamilton Hodell, the project came together after Winchester successfully secured the television rights directly from the trustees of the P.L. Travers estate.
This fresh adaptation completely bypasses the cheerful musical tone of the beloved 1964 Disney feature film. Instead, the television series draws inspiration directly from P.L. Travers’ original eight books. Creators plan to explore the surreal, mysterious, and occasionally frightening elements found within the literary source material. In those novels, Mary Poppins appears far more stern, mercurial, and dangerous than her cinematic counterpart.
Returning to Original Book Lore
The upcoming show will resurrect strange concepts that were entirely omitted from the classic motion picture. Fans can expect eerie magical encounters and bizarre adventures drawn straight from the expanded book universe. Travers openly disapproved of Disney’s upbeat adaptation and its sanitization of her strict character. This new project acts as a direct corrective to that classic cinematic vision.
Early talks are currently underway with Disney executives regarding potential studio involvement in the series. However, Disney approval remains completely unnecessary for production to advance forward. Winchester acquired the rights straight from the estate trustees. He is now actively approaching top tier showrunners to spearhead the upcoming television scripts.
Current Production Status
The production currently sits firmly in the early pitch stage across the television industry. Producers have not locked in any streaming network, cable platform, cast members, or release date yet. Both the independent studio and Disney declined initial comments on the ongoing project. Fans eagerly await further updates on this bold new creative direction.
