Disney California Adventure fans have received a surprising “stay of execution” for a park favorite. The permanent closure of Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! at Disney California Adventure is officially delayed. While the ride was originally expected to close early in 2026 to make way for the new Pandora expansion, guests now have at least another year to enjoy the Hollywood Land favorite.

Construction Re-Sequencing and Strategy

Disneyland President Thomas Mazloum confirmed the new timeline, noting that the decision comes down to smart construction management. Disney’s project team found a way to “re-sequence” the various phases of upcoming expansion projects. This means work on the nearby Avengers Campus and the new Eastern Gateway transportation hub can move forward without requiring the immediate demolition of the Monsters, Inc. building. Mazloum noted that this flexibility allows the park to maintain its capacity for younger guests while other major additions are still under development.

No Delays for Pandora Expansion

Disney quickly clarified that the Pandora – World of Avatar project remains on track, even as the monsters stick around a bit longer. The massive new land still targets a projected opening window in 2028 or 2029. This new version of Pandora will draw inspiration from Avatar: The Way of Water and the upcoming third film, Avatar: Fire and Ash. By keeping the current ride operational, Disney ensures that this section of the park remains functional until heavy thematic work truly begins.

Focusing on Younger Families and Ticket Deals

The delay of this closure ties directly into a larger resort strategy to cater to families with small children. This is especially important as Disney launches its Kids’ Summer 2026 Ticket Deal. Starting May 22, 2026, child tickets for ages 3 to 9 will be available for as low as $50 per day. Keeping a high-capacity, family-friendly dark ride open adds significant value to this promotion. It ensures that parents have a full slate of attractions to enjoy during their summer visits while other areas undergo reimagining.

Ending Park Hopping Restrictions

In another bombshell announcement, Mazloum revealed that all-day park hopping will finally return to the resort later this year. Since 2020, guests have faced restrictions that barred them from switching parks until 11:00 AM. Later this year, Disney will eliminate that wait, allowing guests to hop at any time they choose. While guests must still enter their first park as reserved, this change restores the spontaneous freedom that fans have missed for years.
