Marvel fans are sending waves of support to Evangeline Lilly following a startling health update regarding a 2025 accident. The actress, known for her role as the Wasp, shared the news on New Year’s Day. She revealed that a traumatic fall in Hawaii has left her with permanent brain damage.
A Traumatic Incident in Hawaii
The injury occurred in May 2025 when Lilly unexpectedly fainted while at a beach in Hawaii. During the blackout, she fell face-first into a boulder, which punctured a hole in her face and caused a traumatic brain injury (TBI). While she initially hoped for a quick recovery, recent medical evaluations have shown the impact was far more severe than expected.
On January 1, 2026, Lilly disclosed that recent brain scans show nearly every area of her brain is functioning at a “decreased capacity”. She confirmed that the TBI, possibly combined with other factors, resulted in permanent damage. The actress is now working closely with doctors to begin the difficult process of rehabilitation.
A History of Medical Mystery
Lilly further explained that she has struggled with unexplained fainting spells since she was a child. Though doctors once suspected hypoglycemia, testing in her adult years ruled that out. She described these blackouts as her “little soul reaching her limit” and essentially “leaving the building” when life becomes too overwhelming.
Despite the gravity of the diagnosis, Lilly noted a strange silver lining to her current state. She explained that her cognitive decline actually led to her most restful and calmest Christmas in over a decade. The forced “slowing down” allowed her to finish 2025 with a sense of peace she hadn’t experienced in 14 years.
This health update comes after Lilly announced her decision to step away from Hollywood in June 2024. While she is officially on a hiatus from acting, her primary focus is now on her health and personal recovery. Fans around the world continue to cheer for her as she begins this next chapter.
