The quest for a new high-seas adventure continues. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently confirmed that Margot Robbie is still involved in the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie. This update provides significant encouragement for a project that the actress herself had previously suggested was dead. The franchise is currently navigating complex development waters, but this news solidifies a fresh, female-led direction for the next chapter.
The Producer’s Confident Update
Bruckheimer, the legendary producer behind the entire Pirates franchise, cleared up the confusion on the film’s status. Contrary to reports from late 2022 that the spin-off was abandoned, Bruckheimer confirmed, “She’s still involved,” in a recent interview with Collider.
The original concept was for a female-led story written by Christina Hodson, and despite the slow pace, it appears Disney is committed to making this vision a reality.
Navigating the Two-Script Problem
For some time, two separate Pirates scripts were in development. One was a full mainline reboot, and the other was Robbie’s spin-off. Bruckheimer explained that the development process has been challenging. “We had two scripts at one point, and then one kind of dropped out and we kind of went with the other one,” he said.
He further elaborated on the difficulty of perfecting the project, stating, “The hardest one has been Pirates so far. That world’s so cool and specific. You just gotta find the right way in.” This shows the studio’s commitment to delivering a quality story before setting sail.
Charting a New Course
With Robbie now firmly attached to the moving script, the future of the franchise looks dramatically different. Disney is officially prioritizing a new perspective, moving away from the focus on Captain Jack Sparrow. This confirms a new direction for the series, allowing it to evolve and introduce new characters.
While Bruckheimer remains open to Johnny Depp’s return if the script is right, the core focus is clearly on charting a new course. The continued involvement of Margot Robbie ensures a major star is leading this bold, new direction.
