The potential return of Johnny Depp to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is igniting a new wave of excitement, directly fueled by recent statements from veteran producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Fans of the iconic saga who have long insisted that Captain Jack Sparrow is irreplaceable and that they won’t watch a new film without him, now have fresh reason to hope.

Recent comments from Jerry Bruckheimer, the man behind the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise, are adding major weight to the speculation. He confirmed that the next Pirates film will feature “some” original cast members. “Well, not all new actors. We’ll have some back,” Bruckheimer told Screen Rant.

“I’m not going to tell you which ones — you’ll have to guess.”

He described the project as a “new take” on the franchise, while ensuring it will still exist in the same world as its predecessors.

Bruckheimer further revealed that two distinct scripts are currently in development for the next installment. One of these scripts, he indicated, “presumably” involves Johnny Depp’s return. The producer has also openly expressed his personal desire for Depp to reprise his role, stating, “If it was up to me, [Johnny] would be in it,” back in May 2024 to Entertainment Weekly (EW). He acknowledges Depp’s pivotal importance to the franchise’s success.

Any potential reunion, however, faces a notable past complication: Johnny Depp’s own public stance. During his highly publicized defamation trial, Depp famously testified under oath, stating he would “not take another Pirates of the Caribbean franchise role for $300 million and a million alpacas.” This definitive statement highlighted his strong feelings of betrayal by Disney at the time.

This highly publicized civil defamation trial involved claims by both Depp and his ex-wife, Amber Heard. After weeks of testimony, the jury ultimately found Heard liable for defamation against Depp. This verdict was widely seen as a significant win for Depp and contributed to a resurgence in his public image.

Despite Depp’s previous reluctance and the film’s complex development history, rumors of his potential return have consistently persisted for over a year. Following the trial’s outcome, these persistent whispers suggest he may be “close to a deal” with Disney. Fan pressure also remains a significant factor, with many actively advocating for his comeback and underscoring his enduring appeal as Captain Jack Sparrow.

The future of Captain Jack Sparrow on the high seas thus remains officially unconfirmed. While development continues with two scripts and the potential for original cast members (including interest from Orlando Bloom), the decision ultimately hinges on negotiations and reconciliation between Johnny Depp and Disney. The swashbuckling saga’s next chapter remains a blend of hope, speculation, and strategic silence.
