Anaheim city officials are considering a new aerial gondola system. City leaders want to improve traffic and transportation throughout the city before the 2028 Summer Olympics. The proposed system would connect the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC), Angel Stadium, and the Anaheim Convention Center with Disneyland. This project could offer a major new way for guests to travel.

Project Details

The company behind the proposal, Swyft Cities, recently presented a plan to the city. The gondola system would run along Katella Avenue. It would offer stops at key locations and eventually split into two branches near the parks. Swyft Cities estimates the project would cost $125.7 million. This new plan triples an earlier cost estimate.

A New Way to Travel

The gondola system offers many benefits. It gives guests a scenic, elevated ride above traffic. A new gondola would provide a much-needed direct link from ARTIC to the parks. Disney fans compare the system to Walt Disney World’s successful Skyliner, which has become a popular transportation method for guests. Take a look at some more concept art below:

Project Hurdles

However, the project faces several hurdles. Critics point out the plan calls for the removal of many iconic palm trees along the route. The substantial cost increase also raises concerns. Anaheim has not identified a funding source for the project. The city paid Swyft Cities a consulting fee for the report, but has not committed to building the system.

A Look at the Timeline

A new gondola system would face a very tight timeline. Many experts believe the project cannot finish before the 2028 Olympics. It requires extensive environmental reviews and construction. This lengthy process could take years, and the city needs to get started immediately to meet that deadline.

The Bigger Picture

Anaheim officials continue to look at multiple options. A new gondola system is just one possibility. City representatives say they are also talking with companies like Tesla and Waymo about driverless shuttles. Officials want to find the best way to move people efficiently. The gondola proposal, however, currently grabs the most attention.
