More “lil’ prospectors” can soon board the wildest ride in the wilderness. Disney recently confirmed that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will reopen on May 3, 2026, with a lower height requirement. Guests only need to be 38 inches tall to ride when the attraction returns to Magic Kingdom. This change marks a two-inch drop from the previous 40-inch requirement. This update allows many preschoolers and younger children to experience the coaster for the first time.

Refreshed Trains And Safety Reviews

The new 38-inch rule is possible thanks to a complete overhaul of the ride vehicles. Disney installed refreshed passenger trains during the lengthy 16-month refurbishment. These new vehicles feature updated safety restraints that better secure smaller guests. Disney’s safety teams conducted a comprehensive review of the new equipment before approving the change. This mechanical update ensures that the ride remains safe while becoming more accessible to families.

Smooth Trails Ahead With New Track

The massive project also included a full replacement of the coaster track. Replacing the aging steel provides a much smoother and quieter ride experience. While the mechanics are brand new, Disney preserved the classic storytelling and “hootin’ an’ hollerin'” energy. The mountain still looks like the iconic Frontierland landmark fans love. These technical upgrades simply ensure the ride can operate efficiently for decades to come.

Executive Test Drive At The Mountain

Walt Disney World President Jeff Vahle recently shared a first look at the updated trains. He visited the site with Magic Kingdom Vice President Sarah Riles and Imagineer Wyatt Winter. The leadership team officially tested the new ride vehicles as the project nears completion. Their involvement highlights the importance of this reopening for the park. The team expressed excitement about bringing this classic back to guests with these modern improvements.

A Family-Friendly Strategy For Magic Kingdom

This height adjustment aligns Big Thunder Mountain with other popular family coasters. Attractions like Slinky Dog Dash and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train also feature a 38-inch requirement. By lowering the limit, Disney makes Frontierland more appealing to families with small children. This change helps balance the ride offerings across the park. It ensures that more guests can enjoy the thrills of the mountain together.
