The Disney community mourns the loss of a true industry pioneer. Disney Legend Don Iwerks passed away on Thursday evening at the age of 96. As the eldest son of Mickey Mouse co-creator Ub Iwerks, Don carried a rich creative legacy. Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro paid tribute to the icon, noting that Don’s innovations delighted generations of fans worldwide.
Don started at Walt Disney Productions in 1950 as a photographic technician. His career paused briefly when the military drafted him into the Korean War. He returned to the Studio Machine Shop in 1953. Soon, he contributed his technical expertise to the landmark film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. His mechanical genius helped bring Walt Disney’s most ambitious visions to life.
Transforming the Theme Park Experience
His innovations fundamentally changed how guests experience the theme parks. Iwerks pioneered the Circle-Vision 360 camera system to immerse audiences like never before. He also refined the famous sodium vapor process for Mary Poppins. This technique created seamless blends of live-action and animation. These technical achievements set a brand new standard for Hollywood.
Later, his engineering work defined iconic attractions. He built projection systems for Captain EO and developed the technology powering the original Star Tours simulators. Don even served as the physical hand model for the original Abraham Lincoln Audio-Animatronics figure. These casts became the studio standard for animatronics worldwide, affectionately known as the “Iwerks Hands.”
Industry Recognition and Lasting Honors
After 35 years, Don left Disney to co-found Iwerks Entertainment. The new company revolutionized giant-screen and 3D theaters globally. In 1997, the Academy honored his technical contributions with the prestigious Gordon E. Sawyer Award. Disney inducted him as a Legend in 2009. Today, guests can see his name on a Main Street, U.S.A. window at Magic Kingdom.
