The Walt Disney Company and OpenAI have struck a massive new partnership that merges Hollywood’s most valuable intellectual property (IP) with generative AI technology. The deal includes a $1 billion equity investment by Disney in OpenAI, alongside a three-year IP licensing agreement. This move is aimed at using generative AI tools like Sora to “thoughtfully and responsibly extend the reach of storytelling.”

Characters and Limitations

The IP licensing agreement covers an impressive scale. It includes more than 200 iconic characters from Disney Animation, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars. Users can use these licensed characters in OpenAI’s Sora (the text-to-video platform) and ChatGPT Images. Disney and OpenAI expect fan-generated videos using this licensed IP to start rolling out in early 2026.

However, the deal contains a major limitation. The agreement explicitly excludes talent likenesses or voices. This protects the company’s actors and prevents the unauthorized digital recreation of their personas. Separately, Disney will become a key customer for OpenAI. It plans to use the company’s APIs and ChatGPT to build new internal products and tools for its employees.

Legal Contradictions

CEO Bob Iger framed the deal strategically. He believes it gives Disney “a way in” to participate in AI’s “dramatic growth” rather than AI simply disrupting it. This partnership sets a new precedent for how Hollywood studios control and monetize their IP in the AI age.

This massive collaboration is particularly notable due to the timing. Disney and OpenAI announced the partnership immediately after Disney had taken aggressive legal action against other AI companies. This includes sending a reported cease-and-desist letter to Google just hours before the deal. The letter reportedly accused Google of “infringing Disney’s copyrights.” Despite these legal tensions, Disney is affirming its commitment to the technology. As a final customer benefit, a curated selection of the fan-inspired Sora videos will be available for streaming on the Disney+ platform.
