Seventeen years ago today, Disney CEO Bob Iger fundamentally changed the companyโ€™s relationship with its fans by launching D23. Standing before shareholders in Oakland, California, Iger introduced the first official fan organization in Disney’s history. This historic announcement transformed the community from independent groups into a centralized, company-sanctioned powerhouse.

The Mystery of “Are You 23?”

The launch followed a highly successful “guerrilla” marketing campaign. For weeks, mysterious advertisements appeared across the internet featuring the simple question: “Are you 23?” This campaign sparked massive speculation until Iger finally revealed the meaning during his presentation. He explained that “D” stood for Disney and “23” represented 1923, the year the studio was founded.

The Premiere of Disney twenty-three Magazine

A cornerstone of the new organization was the debut of Disney twenty-three, a high-end quarterly publication. The premiere Spring 2009 issue featured a rare black-and-white photograph of a young Walt Disney. Designed as an advertising-free coffee table book, the magazine offered unprecedented access to the Walt Disney Archives. It introduced fans to rare photography and insider stories previously locked away in the companyโ€™s vaults.

The Original Charter Year Perks

Fans who joined during the inaugural “Charter Year” paid a membership fee of $74.99. The original membership kit became an instant collectorโ€™s item for many. It featured a personalized card and a certificate showcasing classic Disney characters. To sweeten the deal, the company included an exclusive 80th-anniversary lithograph of Mickey Mouse. This membership also granted fans access to “Boutique23,” a dedicated online storefront for limited merchandise.

Paving the Way for the D23 Expo

The March 10 announcement served as a critical precursor to the first-ever D23 Expo. By creating an official fan club, Disney established a platform to host its own “Ultimate Fan Experience.” This new strategy meant that major news would be delivered directly to the fans first. The launch of D23 effectively created the template for how Disney manages its global brand reveals today.

A Lasting Legacy for the Disney Community

Since that day in 2009, D23 has grown into a global institution that dictates the Disney news cycle. What started as a way for Iger to thank the fans has evolved into a massive ecosystem. Today, the organization remains the gold standard for how a major studio interacts with its supporters. March 10 remains the day that Disney officially invited its fans to step inside the magic.
