Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) recently confirmed they are testing Ray-Ban smart glasses for use in the parks. The hands-free devices will serve as “virtual theme park guides” and will revolutionize the guest experience by seamlessly integrating technology into the resorts.

A Heads-Up, Hands-Free Guide

WDI’s primary goal is clear: reduce guests’ reliance on their smartphones. Bruce Vaughn, WDI’s President and CCO, noted that looking down at a phone constantly “breaks that spell” of park immersion. The glasses solve this problem by providing a “virtual theme park guide” directly to the user’s ear. This system keeps the guest’s attention focused on the rich environment around them.

Imagineer Asa Kalama demonstrated the functionality. Guests can look at an architectural detail, a character, or even a piece of merchandise and simply ask the AI assistant a question. The glasses’ location tracking and visual recognition immediately identify the item. The AI then delivers real-time, contextual information, allowing the guest to learn about the land’s lore or find out where to buy an item without ever opening their phone app.

Imagineering’s Next-Generation Tool

The smart glasses are not just for guests; they are a major upgrade for development teams. Bruce Vaughn confirmed that WDI is utilizing the glasses on “greenfield sites,” which are cleared areas designated for future construction. This capability significantly streamlines the design process.

Imagineers can wear the glasses and see a high-fidelity Augmented Reality (AR) overlay of the final attraction or building onto the empty plot. This ability to instantly visualize scale and sightlines helps designers test structural footprints and make rapid adjustments to the virtual model. This makes the development of new lands faster and more precise than ever before.

What This Means for Park Visitors

This technology promises a new era of effortless navigation and adaptive storytelling across Disney parks. Guests gain an immediate source of information that respects their need for immersion. While the Meta Ray-Ban glasses are already available for purchase, Disney has not announced a specific timeline for public park integration. The technology remains in the testing and pilot phases, ensuring a flawless rollout when it eventually debuts.
