A 20-year-old participant in the Disney College Program has tragically died following a sudden lightning strike in Central Florida. Matthew Eric Jenkins, originally from Michigan, had moved to the area one week prior to begin his Disney internship. He dreamed of working in park operations and entertainment production.
The incident occurred Tuesday evening near a walking path behind a Bloom Street hotel in Celebration. Rain poured down heavily across the neighborhood as skies darkened rapidly. Dozens of residents frequently utilize this pedestrian route during evening walks. Witnesses reported that several individuals gathered near the path to seek shelter from a heavy afternoon storm.
Emergency Response and Bystander Efforts
Following the strike, witnesses noticed that Jenkins had collapsed and was unresponsive on the ground. A bystander named Felipe Costa rushed to the scene to perform CPR until paramedics arrived. Medical professionals worked tirelessly to revive him. Emergency responders transported Jenkins to AdventHealth Celebration, where hospital staff pronounced him dead.
Ongoing Investigation and Community Mourning
The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation into the tragedy while awaiting final reports from the medical examiner. Jenkins’ grieving father expressed profound gratitude to the community members who fought desperately to save his son’s life. The heartbreaking loss has sent shockwaves through the local Disney cast member community across social media and local vigils. Family and friends organized online fundraisers and tribute messages.
While authorities continue reviewing the exact timeline of the storm, friends and fellow cast members remember Jenkins with deep fondness. Local meteorologists warn visitors about fast-moving seasonal weather. The accident serves as a sobering reminder of severe weather hazards across Central Florida.
