Disney’s Animal Kingdom officially welcomed a new leader to its primate family this week. Bakari, a 21-year-old male western lowland gorilla, arrived at the park to head the breeding family troop. Animal care experts are currently monitoring the dominant silverback as he adjusts to his massive new role.
The impressive primate now resides along the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail in the Africa section of the park. Disney animal care teams temporarily closed the gorilla habitat on Tuesday to provide the newcomer with a quiet environment during his first full day. Guests will soon see him exploring the lush hillside habitat alongside the rest of the established troop.
Moving From the Bachelor Troop
Bakari brings an impressive background to his new home in Central Florida. Born at the Brookfield Zoo in 2005, he transferred to the Saint Louis Zoo in 2011 at six years old. He spent the last 15 years living within a highly successful, specialized male bachelor troop at the zoo’s Jungle of the Apes exhibit. Take a closer look at him in the habitat below:

In the wild, these bachelor groups provide a natural social structure where young males live together until they mature. Bakari’s time in Saint Louis directly prepared him for this major life transition. The social dynamics taught him the essential leadership skills necessary to protect and guide a breeding family of his own.
Species Survival Plan Role
The carefully planned relocation protects a critically endangered species facing severe threats of extinction in the wild. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums orchestrated the move under the Western Lowland Gorilla Species Survival Plan. This cooperative program manages animal populations across accredited facilities to maintain genetic health and diversity.
Biologists monitor these genetic lines closely before recommending any transfers or breeding pairings. Bakari’s presence at the park directly supports global conservation efforts by providing new genetics to the breeding pool. His transition highlights the vital role accredited zoological parks play in safeguarding vulnerable wildlife.
Continuing a Conservation Legacy
The arrival of the new silverback fills a significant emotional and structural void at the theme park. Bakari succeeds Gino, the iconic, original silverback who passed away last September at the age of 44. Gino inhabited the park since opening day in 1998, fathering 14 offspring and serving as a pioneer for gorilla behavioral studies.
The park continues to celebrate a major season of animal milestones and new beginnings alongside the massive gorilla news. Guests recently welcomed Ivy, a young Masai giraffe calf who made her savanna debut on Kilimanjaro Safaris, and Cinnamon, a new Ankole cattle calf. Bakari represents the next generation of animal care and wildlife education at the resort.
