A major construction milestone has brought brand-new details about the upcoming Monsters, Inc. land. Walt Disney World has pulled back the curtain on the official layout and storyline for Monstropolis at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The massive project is actively transforming a major section of the park. On Thursday morning, Disney revealed the exact in-universe reason why human guests are finally being allowed into the monster world.

The Lore Behind H.U.M.A.N. Day

The storyline for the immersive land takes place directly after the events of the original 2001 Pixar film. Ever since Mike and Sulley discovered that laughter generates more power than screams, the energy crisis has been solved. This monumental shift completely erased the monsters’ old fears of humans being toxic. Now, the city has established a Department of Human Relations to foster a brand-new connection between the two worlds.

The narrative frame for our visit centers on a massive city-wide festival called H.U.M.A.N. Day. This stands for “Humans Understand Monsters Are Nice”. According to The Monstropolis Horn, the city’s official newspaper, this historic celebration serves as a giant cultural exchange. Because of this festival, the doors are opening to mankind for the very first time in history.

First-Ever Suspended Coaster and City Landmarks

The main anchor for Monstropolis is a groundbreaking new attraction set inside the factory door vault. This ride will serve as the first-ever suspended roller coaster in any Disney park. The attraction will feature a unique mechanical vertical lift. This system mimics the movie by hoisting the ride vehicles directly into the air via giant claws.

Beyond the coaster, guests will walk down highly detailed streets built for monsters of all sizes. The land will feature iconic physical landmarks straight out of the movie franchise. Guests can explore monster storefronts, visit the Glob Theater, and dine at the legendary Harryhausen’s sushi restaurant. The land will also include an entirely new theater show, specialty merchandise shops, and custom character meet-and-greets.

Theme Park Footprint and The Muppets Move

Disney confirmed that Monstropolis is being built over the former Grand Avenue and Muppets Courtyard area. Construction crews have already gutted the interior of the former PizzeRizzo restaurant to pave the way for the new land. Recent media previews on the building’s upper balcony showed that physical steel supports are already rising behind the construction walls. While losing the courtyard is a major shift, the Muppets are not leaving Hollywood Studios. The beloved characters are packing up and moving down the street to permanently take over the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster attraction.
