A major mechanical failure on the EPCOT monorail line left guests stranded in the Florida heat this afternoon. Monorail Teal came to a full stop on the beam on April 4, 2026, after suffering an apparent total power loss. Without electricity to run the air conditioning, cabin temperatures inside the sealed compartments began to rise rapidly. The incident forced Disney to shut down the entire EPCOT line for several hours while recovery efforts took place.

Guests Force Windows Open For Relief

Trapped in the sweltering conditions, several guests took the rare step of removing the emergency windows from the monorail cabins. While these windows are designed to be removable in a crisis, they are rarely pulled during a standard mechanical breakdown. Photos from the scene show multiple cabins with missing glass as passengers sought airflow to combat the heat. Maintenance Cast Members eventually arrived to assist the stranded guests as the train sat motionless on the track.

The Tow Back To The Hub

A diesel-powered tow vehicle was eventually deployed to pull Monorail Teal back to the Transportation & Ticket Center (TTC) hub. Onlookers at the station witnessed the train being slowly towed along the beam with its emergency windows still missing. Take a look at the video below to see the recovery operation in progress:

The “Duct Tape Monorail” Reputation

This latest failure highlights the ongoing reliability issues with the aging Mark VI monorail fleet. Originally introduced in 1989, these trains have been in nearly constant service for over three decades. Disney Legend Bob Gurr famously referred to the current fleet as the “duct tape monorail” due to their frequent breakdowns. Despite various refurbishment phases over the years, including the July 2025 addition of glow-in-the-dark logos, the system continues to struggle with major malfunctions.

Pattern Of Recent Safety Issues

Today’s breakdown follows a string of concerning incidents involving the Walt Disney World monorail system. In November 2025, the entire system was briefly closed after Monorail Silver reportedly experienced an onboard fire. These recurring power and mechanical failures suggest that the recent extensive refurbishments may not be enough to sustain the aging fleet. Disney has not yet released an official statement regarding the specific cause of today’s power loss on Monorail Teal.

Backup Transportation Deployed For Guests

To keep crowds moving between the Transportation & Ticket Center and EPCOT, Disney immediately deployed a fleet of backup buses. These dedicated bus routes remained in place for the remainder of the afternoon to bridge the gap left by the shuttered monorail line. Guests visiting the parks this evening should expect higher-than-normal wait times for alternative transportation while maintenance crews inspect the beam.
