The “Force” is now a physical reality for brick builders as the new LEGO Star Wars SMART Play system hits store shelves across the world. LEGO has officially released eight new Star Wars sets featuring the interactive SMART Play platform. These sets allow for a tactile, immersive experience where the build responds to flight patterns and character interactions.

Innovation of the SMART Brick

At the heart of this new experience is the LEGO SMART Brick, a specialized 2×4 element containing a custom chip. This “brain” houses motion sensors and an internal synthesizer that produces high-fidelity audio without the need for a smartphone app. By integrating technology directly into the plastic, the brick identifies its orientation and proximity to other pieces. This allows the physical model to trigger context-specific reactions as it moves through the air.

Interactive Minifigures and Soundscapes

Builders can now unlock authentic Star Wars sounds through the use of SMART Minifigures and SMART Tags. Placing a SMART Darth Vader into his TIE Fighter triggers the iconic engine roar and mechanical breathing. Similarly, the system can play “The Imperial March” when Emperor Palpatine is placed on his throne. These interactions rely on near-field magnetic sensing to keep the experience entirely focused on tactile play.

Flagship Sets and Compatibility

The initial launch includes three “All-in-One” sets that come equipped with the SMART Brick and a wireless charger. These flagship models, featuring Luke’s X-wing and Vader’s TIE Fighter, serve as the primary entry point for the new ecosystem. Five additional compatible sets, such as the Millennium Falcon and Mos Eisley Cantina, are also available to expand the interactive environment. These expansion sets allow collectors to swap their SMART Bricks between different iconic vehicles.

Future of the Platform

While Star Wars is the exclusive launch partner for this technology, the platform is expected to expand into other themes. The success of this screen-free innovation marks a major shift in how the company approaches modern play. For now, the focus remains on the galaxy far, far away as fans experience the first true “living” building sets. These products are available now at major retailers and official online stores.
