The Merc with a Mouth has arrived in the virtual world, but with an unfamiliar voice. Marvel’s Deadpool VR has officially launched, bringing its chaotic, meta-humor action exclusively to Meta Quest 3 headsets. While the game itself is fresh news, the biggest headline surrounds the voice behind the mask. Actor Neil Patrick Harris (NPH) voices the role of Deadpool, not the cinematic star Ryan Reynolds. This casting choice, first announced earlier this year, is now back in the spotlight because the game has launched.

Voice Casting and Gameplay Choice

Developers chose NPH to give the VR version a unique, platform-specific spin on the character. This decision allows the VR game to stand alone. The choice avoided comparisons to the blockbuster movie franchise. Celebrity talent packs the game. John Leguizamo voices the main antagonist, the interdimensional TV tyrant Mojo. The game’s premise perfectly suits its meta casting. Mojo pulls Deadpool into his realm. He essentially hires the hero to “recruit” villains for his reality streaming show.

Ryan Reynolds Unleashes Viral Parody

Ryan Reynolds has made a career out of breaking the fourth wall. He had the ultimate meta-reaction to the casting news. Shortly after the original announcement, Reynolds released a highly comical parody video. He spoofed NPH’s star-making role in the sitcom Doogie Howser, M.D. Donning a lab coat, Reynolds wrote in a journal. The skit had him call NPH a “butthole” for taking his signature role.

The Brilliant Marketing Stunt

The parody video became a viral sensation for both actors. It also functioned as a highly effective promotional piece for the new VR game. Reynolds clearly embraced the joke, working alongside Robyn Lively, who played a love interest on Doogie Howser. She happens to be his sister-in-law. This level of meta-humor reinforced the Deadpool brand while officially passing the VR torch to Harris.

Chaos in the Virtual Realm

Marvel’s Deadpool VR features a fast-paced, hack-and-slash frenzy. Players engage in savage ranged and melee combat, using dual pistols and katanas. The story sends players off to face iconic villains like Mephisto, Lady Deathstrike, Omega Red, and Ultimo. True to the character, the game features a heavy dose of fourth-wall-breaking. Players earn “Mojo bucks” based on their performance. They can then unlock alternate Deadpool variants, including Lady Deadpool and Deadpool Kid.
