Warner Bros. is officially reviving the Gremlins franchise, setting the long-awaited sequel for release on November 19, 2027. The film will be helmed by the original creative forces behind the classic, with executive producer Steven Spielberg and original writer Chris Columbus both returning to the project.
Original Creators Back in Control
The return of Steven Spielberg offers the biggest vote of confidence the project could receive. Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) CEO David Zaslav confirmed the film’s major announcement, which ended more than three decades of speculation and gave the film the highest level of creative backing. Spielberg, who produced the 1984 original, returns as an Executive Producer via his company, Amblin Entertainment. His final sign-off was reportedly the last major hurdle the project faced. This confirms the new film has met his high standards for quality and faithfulness to the original concept.
Chris Columbus, who wrote the first film, will write, produce, and direct this new installment. Columbus has dedicated years to perfecting the script. He has repeatedly stated that the sequel must feel like a true continuation, not a simple reboot. This commitment assures fans that the film will honor the story and characters established in the original films.
Puppets, Not Pixels
The creative team has already addressed one of the biggest fan expectations for the film. The team confirms Gremlins 3 will rely heavily on practical puppetry rather than CGI. This decision is intentional. It will maintain the grotesque, tactile look and chaotic energy that made the original creatures so iconic. Columbus aims for the sequel to feel consistent with the 1980s aesthetic.
The finalized script is now approved and ready for the next phase of production. While original star Zach Galligan (Billy Peltzer) has been vocal about his desire to return, the studio has not made any official casting announcements yet. The film spent years in some stage of development, fueled recently by the success of the animated prequel series, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. The November 2027 date now gives fans a solid timeline for the return of Gizmo and his mischievous offspring.
