A rare 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck near Cuba at approximately 2:00 p.m. on Monday, sending unexpected shockwaves north that were reportedly felt directly inside Walt Disney World property. The rare seismic event originated in the southern Gulf of Mexico, roughly 65 miles west-northwest of Mantua, Cuba. According to reports, tremors traveled hundreds of miles, rattling the theme park resort area and the surrounding Central Florida region for several seconds.
Major Roller Coasters Temporarily Shut Down for Safety
In the minutes following the shaking, a wave of major high-profile attractions at Magic Kingdom simultaneously went down as temporarily unavailable. Popular roller coasters including TRON Lightcycle / Run, Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train suddenly halted operations. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and The Barnstormer were also among the listed closures on the My Disney Experience app.

Disney has not officially confirmed if the widespread attraction closures were directly caused by the earthquake. However, standard theme park operating procedures dictate that major ride systems undergo immediate safety and structural sensor checks following any reported seismic activity. These mandatory safety inspections mirror protocols frequently used at Disneyland Resort in California following West Coast earthquakes.
Seismic Tremors Felt Across the Sunshine State
The unusual midday event sparked immediate confusion across social media as theme park guests and local residents tried to process the movement. Several members of the theme park press on property reported feeling distinct side-to-side tremors lasting between 10 to 15 seconds. No areas or attractions inside the Disney World theme parks required emergency evacuations.

The National Weather Service and local emergency management agencies quickly moved to reassure the public after the event.
