Guests visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom will soon need to say goodbye to one of the park’s most popular residents as Bakso the Sumatran tiger prepares to leave for a new facility this fall. Fresh off celebrating his second birthday, the playful big cat is ready to enter the next major chapter of his life as he transitions into adulthood. While his departure marks a bittersweet moment for regular parkgoers and animal keepers alike, the move represents a crucial step forward for his endangered species.
Born in September 2024 to mother Sohni and father Conrad, Bakso quickly captured the hearts of visitors after making his public debut on the Maharajah Jungle Trek. Fans immediately fell in love with his curious personality, growing stripes, and playful antics around his habitat. Even the origin of his name became a charming fan favorite, inspired by the Indonesian word for meatball. Over the last two years, watching him grow into a confident young adult has been an incredible journey.
The Species Survival Plan and Conservation Goals
The primary reason behind Bakso’s upcoming relocation stems from recommendations made by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan. With fewer than six hundred Sumatran tigers remaining in the wild today, every single birth under human care plays an essential role. As young tigers mature, they naturally become more independent and eventually move away from their maternal territory.
This transfer allows Bakso to move to another accredited zoo where he can eventually contribute to future breeding programs. Disney’s commitment to wildlife protection extends far beyond the park boundaries through initiatives like the Disney Conservation Fund. Since 1995, that fund has directed millions of dollars toward grassroots organizations working tirelessly to protect wild tiger populations.
Visiting Bakso Before His Departure
Before the beloved tiger packs his bags for his new home later this fall, guests still have a limited window to visit him. Dedicated animal keepers and behavioral husbandry managers who have cared for him since birth will continue monitoring his daily routine.
