On this day 60 years ago, Walt Disney held his final press conference, introducing ambitious plans for a new mountain resort. The event happened on September 19, 1966, as Walt shared his grand vision with eager reporters. Nobody knew this media appearance would be his last.

The Vision For Mineral King Ski Resort

Walt Disney planned a massive year-round mountain destination called Mineral King. The remote glacial valley sat in the Sierra Nevada mountains. It rested right next to Sequoia National Park. The master plan featured a stunning Swiss-style alpine village. Visitors would find ski runs, chairlifts, and cozy lodges.

Transporting guests into the fragile alpine valley posed a major hurdle. Imagineering developed an innovative solution to protect the natural environment. A special cog-wheel railway system would ferry visitors into the resort. This transit method kept private automobiles off narrow mountain roads. Walt wanted guests to enjoy nature without harming the landscape.

Environmental Pushback And Legacy

The ambitious mountain resort project quickly faced fierce opposition. Conservation groups like the Sierra Club fought the development plans. Activists argued the resort would ruin pristine wilderness habitats. This heated dispute sparked a landmark Supreme Court case. The legal battle fundamentally shaped modern environmental law.

Walt Disney passed away late in 1966. Without his leadership, the project lost its momentum. Decades of legal battles stalled the development indefinitely. Congress added the Mineral King valley to Sequoia National Park in 1978. The pristine alpine region remains permanently protected wilderness today.
