Disney is officially developing a new, stand-alone live-action film focusing on the arrogant villain from Beauty and the Beast, Gaston. This is a major move in the studio’s strategy of exploring the backstories of its iconic antagonists. It follows the successful formula established by films like Maleficent and Cruella. The project is currently in the early stages, but it signals a significant new direction for one of the company’s most recognizable Renaissance-era characters.
The creative team being assembled suggests a high-energy adventure. Dave Callaham, an industry veteran, is handling the screenplay. Callaham is known for major action and comic book projects, including Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Reports indicate the studio aims for a dynamic, “swashbuckling” tone for this villain tale. Michelle Rejwan, who produced Obi-Wan Kenobi, will produce the film.
What About Luke Evans?
One of the first questions on every fan’s mind concerns the casting. Luke Evans, who perfectly embodied Gaston in the hit 2017 live-action film, will officially not return to the role. Instead, Disney is seeking a “fresh start” for this new iteration. A new actor will feature in the film. This move suggests a distinct interpretation. It grants the creative team maximum freedom without constraints from the 2017 continuity.
Note that this new live-action movie is entirely separate from the previously announced Gaston and LeFou Disney+ prequel series. The studio ultimately scrapped that project, which they briefly titled The Little Town. This new, feature-length film is therefore not an adaptation of the canceled show. It is a completely new, original story concept developed for the big screen.
With an acclaimed writer and producer attached, this new film about the village’s favorite brute has massive potential. It will expand the Beauty and the Beast universe. It promises to offer fans a thrilling new way to see the self-proclaimed hero and his world.
