The groundwork for Walt Disney World’s next decade of growth is officially underway. Disney received full approval for “Project K,” a major, permanent office expansion near Magic Kingdom. This vast construction project will serve as the new creative hub for Imagineering teams. It signals a deep commitment to the large-scale themed lands currently in development at the flagship park.

What is “Project K” and Where is it Located?

“Project K” involves constructing new facilities for Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI). The project occupies the STOLport site. This former small aircraft airstrip sits directly next to the Magic Kingdom guest parking lot. It lies strategically just south of the theme park itself. For years, Imagineering used this space for temporary trailer offices. This new project replaces those trailers with robust, permanent structures.

Project Scope and Infrastructure

The scope of “Project K” is considerable. The expansion impacts 12.51 acres of land. Construction will include two new buildings totaling approximately 66,000 square feet. These structures will house hundreds of designers and engineers. Disney also plans for new accompanying infrastructure. This includes parking, sidewalks, utility hookups, and drainage systems.

The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) granted the official permit. Part of this approval requires environmental work to manage stormwater. The plans detail modifying two existing retention ponds. Crews will convert them into one wet detention pond and one dry detention pond. This work ensures the new expansion meets all local environmental standards.

The Imagineering Command Center

This new office complex will function as a powerful command center for WDI. Its proximity to Magic Kingdom remains critical. The center will directly support the park’s largest projects. These include the massive Disney Villains Land expansion. They also include the Cars-themed Piston Peak National Park development near Frontierland. Approving this permanent hub confirms Disney’s focus on long-term, multi-year construction and development across the resort.
